Sometimes referred to as the Chelsea Pensioners of Warwickshire - but smaller and older - the Brethren of the Lord Leycester Hospital  wear Tudor robes with the silver Bear given by Elizabeth 1 to the first Brothers draped over their arm. When Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, first opened his refuge for warriors there were twelve of them. After the renovations of the Lord Leycester in the 1960s, this number became eight all with self contained homes.

Over the years the Brethren have left a collection of remarkable items to the Hospital including their war medals, a sword and breastplate from the battle of Waterloo, pikes from the civil war and a rifle from Crimea - and of course their stories.  They live together as a band of Brothers - a legacy of the past that has just as much relevance in a modern age where friendship and community are key to well being.

The Lord Leycester Hospital is a registered independent charity (no.: 216831) focusing on protecting one of England's last and best-preserved examples of medieval courtyards as well as providing homes for deserving or wounded veterans.

The upkeep and charity work performed on site is 100% funded through donations, grants, ticket sales and room hire for weddings and events. Your support helps us maintain the magnificent collection of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings located in heart of Warwick as well as our wider charitable objectives of providing almshouses for wounded or aged warriors.

There are many ways in which you can help and support one of the oldest buildings in Warwick and leave your legacy on a crucial piece of British history. From just paying us a visit, to volunteering, there are plenty of ways for you to get involved. Click through the 'Support Us' section of the website to view our current projects and fundraising goals.
