Master & Brethren’s Prayers

Your invitation to join in a tradition established more than 450 years ago.

When Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, established his ‘hospital’, initially for the ‘poor and needy’ but later restricted to military veterans, he laid down rules for its management.

One of these was that should be a daily service of prayers to a set format, also devised by him.

Although for reasons of practicality no longer a daily event, 455 years later this tradition continues, with the Master leading the brethren in a service of prayers following Robert Dudley’s prescribed wording.

Now, for the first time in recent history, you are invited to come and experience this historic ceremony.

There is no charge for attending but a donation towards the upkeep of our historic St James’s Chapel will be gratefully received.

This first public opening of Brethren’s Prayers will occur on Wed 2 April.

Timing:

  • 09:15 Doors open.
  • 09:25 Members of the public to be seated.
  • 09:30 Brethren, followed by Master enter the chapel.
  • Introductory words by the Master and then proceed with the service as given
  • 09:50  Conclusion.  The Great Hall café will be open for refreshments.

We look forward to opening our doors to you all for this sacred tradition.
